🐾 Wildlife Watcher Challenge

Become a Nature Detective

Wildlife is everywhere! You just have to slow down and look.

In this challenge, you will become a Wildlife Watcher by observing the animals around you, recording what you find,
and sharing your discoveries with the world.

👀 Your Mission

Over a period of time (a few days or a few weeks), you must:

🐦 Record 5 different birds
🐜 Record 5 different insects

Take your time. The best Wildlife Watchers don’t rush.

🌿 When to Look

Early morning – birds are most active and calling
Late afternoon – lots of movement before sunset
Warm, sunny days – insects are easier to find
After rain – look for new activity and different species

🔍 What to Look For

Look closely and notice details:

For birds:

  • Size
  • Colours and patterns
  • Beak shape
  • Movement (hopping, flying, gliding)
  • Sounds and calls

For insects:

  • Number of legs and wings
  • Colours and markings
  • Where you found them
  • How they move (crawl, jump, fly)

🧠 Try to Identify Them

See if you can figure out what you found:

  • Ask an adult or teacher
  • Use a book
  • Compare with pictures
  • Use the suggestions inside iNaturalist

You don’t have to be right every time. Trying is what matters.

📱 Upload Your Discoveries to iNaturalist

Now you get to be part of real wildlife science!

Step 1: Get the app
Ask an adult to help you download iNaturalist on a phone or tablet.

Step 2: Create an account
Use a parent or guardian’s help to sign up.

Step 3: Add an observation
Each time you find a bird or insect:

  • Take a clear photo
  • Open the app and tap “Observe”
  • Upload your photo
  • Add where you saw it (location)
  • Add the date
  • Let the app suggest what it might be

Don’t worry bout identifying your observations – iNaturalist will help you!

Step 4: Save your observation
Tap “Upload” to share it.

🌍 Your observation helps scientists and conservationists understand wildlife in your area!

📝 Share Your Findings

When you’re ready, it’s time to share your work.

Go to the Wildlife Heroes Community and:

👉 Create a post called: WILDLIFE WATCHER

In your post, include:

  • Your 5 birds
  • Your 5 insects
  • Photos, drawings, or descriptions
  • Any names or identifications you discovered
  • (Optional) Screenshots or links to your iNaturalist observations

🛑 Wild Ways Safety & Ethics

Great Wildlife Watchers know that how we observe matters just as much as what we see.

Follow these simple rules to keep wildlife safe:

  • Look, don’t touch
    Wild animals can become stressed very easily. Never pick them up or try to handle them.
  • Keep your distance
    If an animal changes its behaviour because of you, you are too close.
  • Do not disturb nests or hiding places
    Even getting too close can cause parents to abandon their young.
  • Be quiet and calm
    Move slowly, speak softly, and let wildlife carry on naturally.
  • Leave no trace
    Do not damage plants, move rocks, or disturb habitats.
  • If an animal looks injured or in danger
    Do not try to rescue it yourself. Ask an adult to contact a trained wildlife responder.
