It's time to learn about the important roles insects play in eco-systems and why we should protect them! Get ready to learn about the fascinating world of mini-beasts and earn your Insect Investigator Badge!
Come and discover what makes an insect an insect, why they are SO important, and how we can protect them.
Soil Scientist
It's time to go underground to explore why SOIL is so important!
In this course, you will become a Soil Scientist. You will investigate different soil types, test how soil holds water, look for signs of soil life, build your own mini soil profile, and discover what makes soil healthy.
Seed Starter
Seeds are small, but they are mighty. Some are as tiny as specks of dust. Others are bigger than coconuts! Some seeds float through the air, some travel in water, some stick to animal fur, and some get eaten by birds and dropped somewhere new.
In this badge, you will learn about different kinds of seeds, how seeds move from place to place, and what seeds need to begin growing. You will also do your own Seed Starter challenge. You can either test whether seeds need soil to germinate, or research a seed and create a poster. When you are done, you will share your activity in the Backyard Biologists Community.

Help Your Habitat
Your habitat is the space around you.
It could be your garden, your street, your school, or your suburb.
Wildlife lives all around us.
When we take care of these spaces, we help animals survive and thrive.
This challenge is about helping your habitat in ways that support wildlife without disturbing them.

Step 1:

Create a post in Earth Protectors Community and call it HABITAT HERO
Share what you did for this challenge in your post
1. Clean & Protect
- Pick up litter in your area
- Clean a small natural space like a garden, park, or roadside
- Safely remove harmful items like plastic, string, or glass
- Remember to wear protective gloves
2. Grow & Restore
Create a small wildlife-friendly space in your garden, local park, or even on your balcony. What matters most is that this is an undisturbed place, free from chemicals and litter.
- Care for plants by watering and protecting them and never use harmful chemical pesticides
- Leave a “wild corner” where nature is not disturbed
- Add stones to shallow water bowls so small animals can escape and bees and other pollinators can drink safely. Remember to clean the water container and add fresh water every day or two.
- Remove or fix hazards like tatty netting or loose string
3. Share Your Impact
- Share what you did with your family or class and teach them about what it means to be habitat hero.
This can be a digital poster you share or a short talk.

You will also meet some amazing young earth protectors who are coming up with clever alternatives to plastic - and you will come up with your own solutions to reduce plastic in your everyday life. Are you ready to become an Earth Protector and earn your Plastic Detective badge?

The Power of Giving
Instead of throwing away the toys, books or clothing you no longer need, you can donate them to a charity shop so they can sell it and make money for a good cause! This is what we call a win-win situation... Good for the planet and good for people.
When you donate items you no longer need:

You help families and communities
You protect wildlife and nature
That’s what being a Generous Heart is all about.

Step 3: Prepare Your Donation
Wash clothes if needed
Make sure toys are clean and safe
Make sure toys are not broken or missing pieces
Pack everything neatly into a box
Take pics of your items ready to be donated
Step 4: Donate
Ask a parent or guardian to help you find a local charity shop where you can take your donations.

As you read, think about:

Answer these questions:
- How was Sam feeling at the start of the story?
- What helped Sam pause and think instead of reacting?
- What did Sam do differently at school?
- What happened when Sam made a new choice?
- What do you think the story is trying to teach us?
